Cougars Under 7’s Do The Business

Cougars youngest team the Under 7’s played out some good matches on Saturday. The Blues and Whites faced their strongest opposition so far this season as Bishop Stortford travelled to The Bury and Cougars ran out winners by three goals to two. Buntingford’s Under 7’s Whites and Stripes then put in an equally impressive performance against Ashwell Academicals to produce an emphatic win with Ethan Megennis-Hicks, Alfie Vottariello, Beau Lampard, Ronan McGuire, Jonny Rofe and Oliver Curran amongst those putting in fantastic performances. You can see from the pictures how the youngsters love playing for Cougars.

Cougars Under8’s earned a draw at home to Bishop Stortford with lots of effort from both the Blues and Whites teams producing what Wes Cook described as one of their best performances to date. Also at The Bury on Saturday Danny Skipp’s Under9’s were victorious against a strong St Davids team from Stevenage with Joseph McKinley, Spencer Sendall and Billy Pullen amongst the scorers.

Cougars Under11’s did not fare so well. The Blues started well with George Godfrey scoring in his fifth consecutive match but were not able to cope with a strong Bishop Stortford Athletic side, eventually going down four – one. Jake Vottariello was man of the match for Darryl Dean’s side. Cougars Under11’s Stripes were also defeated on Sunday, beaten by FC Comets despite great goals from Yann Boulter and Ciaran Jenkins and Man of the Match accolade going to Charlie Griggs.

Chris Adam’s Under 15s continued their impressive run in the Mid Herts Premier Division when they hosted Wormley at The Bury. With both sides only having lost one game each this season it proved, as expected to be an evenly contested affair. Cougars started brightly and on two minutes Alex Hewer was unlucky to see his shot cannon off the bar. After eight minutes the hosts made the breakthrough after free kick 30 yards out was delivered perfectly by Liam Smith onto the head of Hewer who headed in. On twenty minutes the lead was doubled when Archie Rhodes won a ball, beat three defenders and laid the ball to the edge of the penalty box where Luke Garratt fired home.

Buntingford continued to be on top but wasted opportunities to wrap the game up and this meant that Wormley always posed a real threat. The visitors boast the league’s top goal scorer a strong skilful pacey striker but Sid Arnold was doing a great job in keeping him quiet and with Jay Caine in goal sweeping up behind the back four Cougars gave Wormley only limited sights of goal.

The second half started well for the visitors who pressured from the off and would have scored had it not been for a brave stop by Caine at the feet of their striker. The Cougars guardian though could do nothing ten minutes later after a wonderful free kick flew into the top corner. The away side continued to press and soon scored a second to equal the scores when Buntingford allowed too much time and space to Wormley and they duly took full advantage.

Despite the visitors now being in the ascendency Cougars worked hard and showed real character and desire to re gain possession. With ten minutes left and probably the best move of the game Dan Curtis, playing a blinder out on the left beat two players before laying the ball off to Garratt who travelled towards the box and played a beautiful ball into the path of Rhodes who drew the keeper and slid home to put the hosts three two up. Inevitably Wormley responded well and forced Caine to make his best saves with a top draw double stop before pouncing on the ball before time ran out for Wormley and Cougars ran out victors three goals to two.

In the BT Sport newsroom after the game a jubilant Chris Adams was thrilled saying “A great result today against a really good Wormley side who are physical but very talented. If we rewound 12 months having been pegged back I have no doubt we would have lacked the desire to go on and win the game and for me this shows the progress the boys are making coupled with the effort they’re prepared to put in. Special mentions great to have Jay Caine back in goal doing what he does so well and Luke Garratt back up front doing likewise. But I’ll go with a good old fashioned cop out and say a great team performance today from everyone.”

Elsewhere Cougars Under12’s had an emphatic nine – nil win with Marcel Zakrzewski delighted with yet another clean sheet. Richard Thorp’s Under13s Blues travelled to Hitchin Town and played out an exciting five-four match but were unfortunately on the wrong end of the scoreline. The Under13’s Whites conceded four but still ran out winners as Bobby Whites team scored eight at Letchworth. In the Under16’s section Cougars Whites lost 5-1 at home to Stortford Swifts whilst Sean Curran’s Under16’s Blues saw off Letchworth two nil.
