TUMI TOPS TENSE TEN GOAL THRILLER FOR TANNERS U8S WHITES

Cougars U8s Whites Whites certainly entertained the crowd away to Morden Magpies Reds, edging a ten goal thriller in Steeple Morden.

Lining up with James Willis in goal, Finlay Tanner at the back, Thomas Deane wide right, Tumi Awoyemi out left and Noah Benton up front with Tyler Cole supporting off the bench, the Whites quickly established a two goal lead. First on the scoresheet was Awoyemi with a great left foot finish into the bottom corner. Then, after Awoyemi had a thunderbolt shot saved by the Magpies keeper, Deane was first to react and fed Benton for a close range tap in. The Magpies pulled one back but just before half time Deane intercepted the ball in his own half, set off on a mazy run and finished calmly to give the Whites a two goal cushion.

The second half saw regular goals at both ends and a keenly fought contest. Early on, the Magpies keeper was in form saving from Cole, then Awoyemi, then Tanner before the next goal arrived – Awoyemi’s cross-shot coming off the post and Tanner reacting first to tap in. Deane was marshalling the back line and as in the first half Willis made a string of saves to keep the Whites in front. It was a nervy finish but thankfully for the Whites a Benton goal on the break from a great Awoyemi pass and a 20 yard shot right on the whistle from Tanner sealed the game.
