Cougars Under 8s Put on a Show

Cougars Under8s put in easily their best performance of the season on Saturday against Ashwell Academicals. Both teams started well with Buntingford moving the ball well with some crisp passing whilst Ashwell tried to hit the Cougars on the break with some impressive counter attacks. After some long range efforts went wide from the home side’s Hayden Whalley and George Withey it was the visitors who opened the scoring and then added a second to come into the interval two goals up.

The second half though was a different story as Cougars stepped up a gear after a great save in the air from the host’s keeper Stuart Eariss. Soon after Cougars’ midfielder Geoge Withey picked up the ball in the middle of the park and dribbled past two defenders before firing a left foot shot into the bottom corner. The goal spurned Cougars onto better things as Archie Vass-Smart and Heydon Whalley started to win the midfield battle. Indeed it was a Whalley tackle and quick pass that set up Cougars equaliser as he found George Godfrey. The Striker shimmied on the edge of the area before rifling in a low shot to make it two each.

The teams then had a second match where both teams created a lot of chances in an exciting encounter. The visitors were seeking an early goal again but the bravery of Cougars Defenders Luke Goodchild, Evan Howard and Josh Ridings kept the visitors at bay. They couldn’t stop goals later in the game but that was after George Godfrey again scored with a low shot to take his goal tally to two for the day.

After the game Cougars Coach Richard Whalley said “ The boys were awesome today. It was a bit like watching Brazil.”
